There Are Only 2 Real AI Shops in the Southern Tier

Search "AI consulting Binghamton" and you'll get pages of results. Sounds like a boomtown. I checked every one of them. I have bad news.

Most of those companies don't exist here. Some don't really exist anywhere. Here's what's actually behind the search results, and how to tell the real ones from the out-of-town spam — whether you hire me or not.

What we found when we actually looked

• One legacy IT company with 35 years of local trust — solid shop in Endicott, great at networks and computers. AI is not their thing, no matter what their sales sheet says this quarter.
• One remote AI consultancy with real work — no office here, no phone number you can call, no local presence. Decent case studies on their site. When something breaks at 8 AM on a Monday, they're in a different time zone.
• A pile of programmatic shells — one has 23 "AI consulting in [your city]" pages. Another has 989. A Ukrainian firm auto-generates a page for every city in America. A Portland SEO shop wrote a "Custom AI Agents for Binghamton" page. None of these companies has ever driven here.
• Per-call pricing everywhere — every AI voice vendor meters you by the call or the minute, so your bill spikes exactly when your marketing works. That's why we sell it as one flat monthly rate instead: you get a fixed number up front — quoted after reviewing your requirements — and it stays the same number in December.

That's it. That's the whole list. A region with thousands of small businesses and maybe two shops that actually do AI work locally, one of which is us.

The 5-question test for any "local AI expert"

1. "Can I visit your office?" A real local business has an address they'll give you without hesitating. A programmatic shell has a contact form and an email address.
2. "Show me a working deployment, not a case study PDF." Ask them to play you a recording of their AI answering a real call. If they've never deployed one, you'll hear it in the silence.
3. "What does it cost per call?" People who run real agents know their per-call number cold. People who read about AI don't.
4. "Who answers when it breaks?" Software breaks. The question is whether the person fixing it is in your time zone and knows your setup, or is a ticket in a queue.
5. "Google the company name plus 'address'." If the address turns out to be Denver, or Kyiv, or a Palo Alto mailbox — now you know what "serving Binghamton" meant.

Why this matters more than it sounds

An AI phone agent is not a website you set and forget. It's a system that touches your customers on day one. The setup quality decides whether it books jobs or hangs up on them. The maintenance decides whether it keeps working in March. Choose someone who can sit across the table from you, and you've removed most of the risk before spending a dollar.

There's a second reason to buy local: the people building fake-local pages are betting you won't notice. That tells you exactly how they'll treat your project.

Where the region actually stands

Binghamton has a genuinely good startup ecosystem. The Koffman Incubator downtown is the real deal, Binghamton University feeds it, and AI and software startups are part of what they grow. That energy hasn't reached Main Street businesses yet. The HVAC shop in Vestal and the salon in Endicott aren't getting AI from the incubator. They're getting cold calls from companies two states away.

That's the gap. Somebody has to walk into the shop, look at their actual call volume, and set up the thing that catches the after-hours calls. That somebody should be local.
